Hides of Hera is built around the belief that good work takes time.

Every piece is designed, cut, stitched, finished, and inspected by hand in our small workshop. The process is slow because it is meant to be.

The Art of Crafting

The Craft

Pen & Paper

The process begins with pen and paper. Ideas are sketched, adjusted, and refined. Proportions are tested. Details are considered. Paper prototypes are folded, handled, and reworked until the design feels natural both on paper and in hand.

The Template

Once the design is complete, a template is created. This preserves the integrity of the piece while still allowing for the subtle differences that come with handwork.

Cutting The Leather

Only then does the process move to leather. Each component is carefully cut from the chosen hide. Edges are shaped. Stitching lines are marked. Holes are hand-punched in preparation for saddle stitching.

Saddle Stitching

Saddle stitching is a traditional method known for strength and durability. Each stitch is completed by hand using two needles and a single thread. There is no way to rush it.

Burnishing & Finishing

Once stitched, the edges are burnished, waxed, and finished by hand. The final piece is inspected, prepared, and sent on its way.

The making ends. Its life begins. From the hands that shaped it to the hands that will carry it, wear it, and live with it.

The Materials

Vegetable-Tanned

Traditional, natural and made to age beautifully. Vegetable tanned leather is treated using natural tannins, allowing the character of the hide to remain visible. With time, it deepens in color, softens with use and develops a unique patina shaped by the hands, places and moments it travels through.

Chrome-Tanned

Soft, supple and versatile. Chrome tanned leather is treated for flexibility and durability, allowing it to retain its colour and finish while remaining comfortable to handle and carry. Available in a wide range of tones and textures, it brings a different character to every piece.

Suede

Soft, tactile and naturally understated. Suede is finished from the underside of the hide, giving it its distinctive velvety surface and gentle feel. Its texture brings warmth and depth to a piece, becoming softer and more familiar with every touch.

What makes it ours...

Two needles. One thread. Every stitch passed through by hand.

It is slower than a machine, but that is precisely the point. There is no production line behind each piece, no shortcut between the maker and the finished object. Every hole is placed, every stitch pulled, every edge finished by hand.

The result is more than a strong seam. It is a small record of the hands that made it.

No two pieces will ever be completely alike. The leather carries its own marks, the thread its own rhythm, and with time, both become shaped by the person who carries them.

Caring For Your Hides of Hera

Leather is a natural material and changes over time. To help your piece age beautifully:

Avoid prolonged exposure to water

Keep away from harsh chemicals and cleaners

Store in a cool, dry place when not in use

Avoid leaving it under direct sunlight for long periods

Condition only when needed

Let natural marks and patina become part of the story

Small scratches, folds, and changes in colour are expected with use. They are not signs of failure. They are signs of life.
